UAE shoppers report jump in fruit and vegetable prices across supermarkets

Many residents across the United Arab Emirates have recently begun noticing a change during their routine supermarket visits. Items that are commonly part of everyday meals—especially fresh fruits and vegetables—appear to be costing more than they did just a week earlier. While grocery shopping is a regular activity for most households, the recent shift in prices has prompted conversations among shoppers who say their weekly spending has quietly started to increase.

Fresh produce plays an essential role in daily cooking for many families in the UAE. Vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and leafy greens are used in a wide range of meals, while fruits like apples, bananas, and pomegranates are commonly purchased for snacks and breakfast. Because these items are purchased frequently, even a small change in price can become noticeable very quickly.

Over the past few days, several shoppers reported that their total grocery bills felt higher than usual. Some residents said the increase was particularly visible when purchasing fresh produce, where the cost of certain items appeared significantly higher compared with the previous week.

For families who plan their household budgets carefully, changes in the price of daily essentials can have a direct impact. Many households allocate a fixed amount for groceries each week, so sudden price changes in commonly used foods can affect purchasing decisions.

In many cases, consumers say they first noticed the difference while buying items that are used almost every day. Vegetables such as onions and tomatoes are staple ingredients in many kitchens, which makes price changes especially noticeable. Fruits that are frequently purchased for children or family meals also seem to have become more expensive in some supermarkets.

Because fresh produce is perishable and must move quickly through supply chains, its pricing can sometimes change faster than other types of food. Items that rely on rapid transportation, cold storage, or international imports may respond quickly to shifts in logistics or demand.

Some shoppers noted that certain fruits and vegetables appeared to cost considerably more than they had only days earlier. In a few cases, the price difference was large enough to catch attention immediately during checkout.

Even with these increases, many consumers say it is difficult to reduce purchases of these products. Fresh produce remains an important part of daily meals, making it less flexible compared with luxury or optional food items.

Experts say there are several factors that can influence short-term price changes for fruits and vegetables. Global supply chains play a major role in determining how quickly products move from farms to store shelves. Transportation costs, fuel prices, and shipping logistics can all influence the final price consumers see in supermarkets.

Markets that depend heavily on imported food can be particularly sensitive to changes in international logistics. When transportation costs rise or shipping routes become slower, the price of imported produce can increase as well.

Another factor that may affect fresh food pricing is seasonal demand. During certain periods of the year, consumer demand for fresh produce can rise as households focus more on healthy meals and home cooking. When demand increases quickly, prices in some outlets may temporarily adjust.

Retailers, however, say that the overall supply situation remains stable. Many supermarket operators note that fresh fruits and vegetables are sourced from multiple suppliers around the world as well as from regional producers. This diversified sourcing helps maintain steady supply even when certain logistics challenges occur.

Some retailers have stated that while small fluctuations in produce prices can happen, they have not observed major price spikes across their stores. Demand for fresh items may increase at times, but suppliers and retailers often work together to keep supply chains moving smoothly.

Government authorities also maintain systems to monitor retail prices across the country. Digital monitoring tools track price data from hundreds of retail outlets, allowing inspection teams to observe changes and ensure compliance with national pricing guidelines.

This monitoring framework helps authorities maintain transparency and prevent unjustified increases in consumer goods. The system connects directly with major retailers, enabling officials to review price information in real time across supermarkets, hypermarkets, and cooperative stores.

It is important to note that only certain essential food categories are regulated under national pricing policies. These include staples such as cooking oil, rice, dairy products, eggs, poultry, sugar, legumes, bread, and wheat. Retailers are not allowed to increase prices for these items without official approval.

Fruits and vegetables, however, are not included in this specific category, which means their prices may fluctuate based on supply, transportation, and market demand.

Toward the end of recent discussions, analysts highlighted another key factor that may influence produce prices over time: global logistics and transportation costs. In markets that rely on imported food, shipping routes and fuel costs can affect how quickly goods arrive and how much they cost to transport.

If transportation expenses increase or supply routes slow down, products that require fast delivery—such as fresh fruits and vegetables—are often among the first to reflect those changes in store pricing.

Despite the recent reports from shoppers, retailers say they continue working with suppliers to maintain stable inventories and avoid large disruptions. Authorities are also continuing to monitor retail pricing closely to ensure fairness and transparency across the market.

For consumers, this means that while short-term price movements can occur, the broader system of supply monitoring and diversified sourcing is designed to keep grocery markets stable over time.
