Forget Mascara: Gen Z in Singapore Is Falling for the “Ghost Lash” Trend

For decades, the beauty world has been dominated by the “bigger is better” philosophy when it comes to lashes. Every mascara promises extreme length and dramatic volume, while eyelash extensions have long been a costly, time-consuming ritual for those chasing the perfect flutter. But in a shift that echoes other Gen Z beauty movements, many young people in Singapore are embracing the exact opposite: ghost lashes. And unlike fleeting fads, this understated look is gaining traction across social media, fashion events, and everyday routines.

What Are Ghost Lashes?

Ghost lashes are essentially your natural lashes, enhanced subtly without heavy product or transformation. They earn their name because they appear almost invisible compared with the thick, layered styles that dominated beauty trends for years.

“Ghost lashes are similar to the no-makeup makeup trend,” explains Manuel Espinoza, a professional celebrity makeup artist and brand ambassador. “They focus on enhancing your natural lashes in an almost imperceptible way, creating a delicate, effortless effect.”

Celebrity makeup artist Tonya Riner adds that this minimalist approach is refreshing. “Bare or barely-there lashes allow your natural features to stand out. It’s a cleaner, lighter aesthetic that feels like a break from overly dramatic eye looks.”

Why Ghost Lashes Are Gaining Popularity

Trends often emerge in response to what’s already popular, and ghost lashes offer a counterpoint to decades of heavy mascara. Part of their appeal lies in simplicity—there’s elegance in a look that doesn’t rely on bulk or volume.

“Skipping mascara reduces the risk of smudging or clumping while giving your lashes a chance to breathe,” Riner says. “Not every makeup style benefits from added lash dimension. Sometimes less really is more.”

Espinoza points out another practical advantage: “Frequent eyelash extensions can weaken or damage natural lashes. Wearing them bare gives lashes the opportunity to recover and grow, while avoiding the daily wear-and-tear from heavy mascara.”

How to Naturally Enhance Your Lashes

While the most straightforward way to achieve ghost lashes is to go completely bare, there are subtle ways to maintain a polished look:

  • Tightlining: Applying a shimmer eyeliner along the top lash line adds definition without mascara. “It creates a soft, reflective glow that enhances the eyes naturally,” says Riner.

  • Smudged Eyeliner: At recent international fashion shows, dark eyeshadow was applied at the lash roots with no mascara. “This technique defines the eyes while keeping the look soft and wearable,” Espinoza notes.

  • Lash Serums: Many are turning to serums as a natural alternative to lengthen and strengthen lashes over time. Espinoza says, “Clients often incorporate lash serums into their daily skincare routines for healthy, fuller lashes.”

  • Clear or Brown Mascara: For those hesitant to go completely bare, clear or lightweight brown mascara can add subtle sheen and definition without overwhelming the natural look.

A Shift Toward Minimalism in Beauty

Ghost lashes are more than a style—they represent a broader shift toward simplicity and self-expression in beauty. By prioritizing natural features and gentle enhancements, this trend allows individuals to experiment with eye looks in a low-maintenance, low-stress way.

In Singapore, where the beauty scene is fast-moving and social media trends spread rapidly, ghost lashes are proving that less can truly be more—offering a fresh alternative to decades of mascara mania.
