A new Game of Thrones prequel movie is currently in the works.
Beau Willimon, known for his work on popular shows like House of Cards and the Star Wars spin-off Andor, has been chosen to write the script for the film, which is under development at Warner Bros.
In a recent Hollywood Reporter cover story featuring Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, it was hinted that the movie will be a "Dune-sized feature film" based on King Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros, uniting six of the seven kingdoms around 300 years prior to the events of the Game of Thrones pilot episode.
Additionally, HBO is working on a TV series inspired by the same story.
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones on television in 2019, several spin-off projects have been brought to life.
The prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered earlier this year, and the third season of House of the Dragon is scheduled to debut in June.
Warner Bros.' involvement comes during a time of uncertainty for the studio after its recent acquisition by Paramount Skydance for US$110 billion (S$140 billion).
Paramount CEO David Ellison has pledged to "honour the legacy of two iconic companies while accelerating our vision of building a next-generation media and entertainment company" through the deal.
Although the final season of Game of Thrones faced heavy criticism from viewers, actor Kit Harington, known for his role as Jon Snow, expressed frustration over the online petition calling for a remake of the episodes, considering it disrespectful to showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.
Addressing the backlash, Harington stated, "Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn't quite work."
Reflecting on the end of the series, Kit acknowledged that he and the cast were "tired" by the conclusion of the show's run, indicating that they were physically and mentally drained, leaving no capacity for further seasons.
