Mary Hon admitted that she once felt inadequate as the godmother to Charmaine Hui, the daughter of the late actor Benz Hui.
The 71-year-old Hong Kong actress opened up about her bond with the 28-year-old host in a YouTube interview with veteran journalist Wong Man Ling released on Feb 27.
She revealed that despite being Charmaine's godmother since her birth, their relationship truly blossomed when Charmaine turned 18.
Mary explained, "She went to study in Singapore while I was in Australia. Our schedules didn't align for us to meet often."
"It was only when she returned to Hong Kong for university and I happened to be there too, that we had the opportunity to connect more frequently and strengthen our bond."
Mary praised Charmaine for her filial piety, maturity, and thoughtfulness beyond her years.
"While in Hong Kong, she would video call her grandmother in Singapore every night, checking on her well-being and showing great care and concern. She's very attentive and compassionate towards the elderly," Mary remarked.
She also mentioned that Charmaine extended the same caring gestures to her grandfather in Hong Kong and her stepbrother in Australia, ensuring to stay in touch with them regularly.
Before Benz's passing, when his family lived near Mary and her husband To Yin-gor in Hong Kong, they would frequently gather for meals, sometimes meeting three to four times a month or even more, as Benz enjoyed hosting friends at their home.
"So when Benz left us unexpectedly, everyone was deeply saddened. Even now, I still feel a profound sense of loss," Mary expressed.
"After Benz's departure, I relocated to Zhongshan in Guangdong, China, and during that time, I couldn't provide Charmaine with the support she needed. As her godmother, I feel a sense of indebtedness towards her."
Benz passed away from multiple organ failure caused by cancer. Many celebrities, such as Nick Cheung, George Lam, and Raymond Wong, paid their final respects to him.
Charmaine, who is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, currently resides in Hong Kong and is signed with Chessman HK's management company.
